KIND
OF WORK:
Advanced technical position reporting to the County
Engineer responsible for the review of all residential, commercial and
industrial development and/or building plans to determine if they are in
compliance with all applicable ordinances and standard design criteria.
Position may also receive direction from Assistant County Engineer II
classification.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK:

o
Review
of residential, commercial and industrial development plans. Verifies
that they meet all design criteria set forth by Berkeley County and are
in compliance with all applicable ordinances and standard design
criteria. Once acceptable, may make appropriate recommendation to the
Berkeley County Planning Commission.
o
Meet
with homeowners, developers, engineers, contractors and staff, in both
the office and on-site, regarding various development related design and
construction issues.
o
Prepare
construction cost estimates.
o
Receives,
answers and responds to citizens inquires and complaints regarding
engineering or building permit related matters.
o
Conducts
field inspections including sediment and erosion control measures being
installed, proof-roll inspections of roads, stone base and shoulders of
road, pavement, culverts, drywells, storm water management and/or other
information as shown on plans.
o
Field
inspections of building construction items.
o
Performs
engineering and land surveying calculations and other related
engineering duties.
o
Review
and approval of building permit applications to assure compliance with
applicable building codes.
o
Performs
related tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
AND REQUIREMENTS:
o
Any combination of
education and experience equivalent to a bachelors degree from an
accredited college or university with major course work in civil
engineering, architectural engineering, or architecture or related field
and with additional studies in the field of highway design and storm
water management.
o
Experience in storm water
management, road design and civil engineering focusing on site,
subdivision development and/or building construction desired but not
essential.
o
Excellent
oral and written communications skills.
o
Ability
to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information and to
prepare and present technical oral and written reports.
o
Ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
associates, engineers, developers, contactors, government officials,
other agencies and the general public.
o
Proficiency
in the use of MicroSoft Office products and AutoCad.

Berkeley County normally does not reimburse travel expenses incurred to
attend a scheduled interview.
EXAMINATION
PROCEDURE:
The kind of
examination/screening for positions announced will vary with each
position and may include:

an evaluation of training
and experience
o
personal and/or group
interview
o
written and/or spoken
examination(s)
o
performance test(s)
o
a background investigation
o
a physical examination*and
o
a drug test*.
*These examinations
are administered after offer of employment.
PROBATIONARY
PERIOD:
Berkeley County is an
“At-Will” employer. However, new employees normally serve a
probationary period of six (6) months before attaining regular status.
The length of the probationary period may vary depending on the position
and may be extended depending on performance. The probationary period is
considered part of the examination process to determine the employees
fitness for the position in which he/she was placed.
COMPENSATION:
Berkeley County
employees are paid every two (2) weeks. A new employee ordinarily starts
work at the rate specified in this announcement. The Berkeley County
Commission reviews compensation increases as part of the normal budget
preparation process and makes the appropriate compensation adjustments
at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1).
ANNUAL
LEAVE, SICK LEAVE AND HOLIDAYS:

unavailable for part-time and temporary positions)
o
Employees earn 1.50 days of
sick leave per month/18 days annually with unlimited accumulation.
o
Berkeley County observes 12
paid holidays per year and Primary and General Election Days as they
occur.
o
Employees accumulate annual
leave according to the following schedule:

coverage. The County pays 100% of the employee costs and the employee
pays for any dependent coverage elected.
