KIND
OF WORK:
Responsible for
reviewing permit applications and construction documents for compliance
with local building codes and ordinances.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK:
o
Review applications for
permits for commercial and residential projects for compliance with
state and local codes and ordinances, including written comments and
responses.
o
Answer questions and assist
design professionals, architects and engineers and the general public by
phone or by meetings with regard to code requirements and solutions to
specific problems.
o
Perform Model Energy Code
calculations on all new construction of habitable spaces.
o
Assist County Engineer with
reviews of commercial building permit applications for compliance with
state and local codes.
o
Assist and direct
department personnel with regard to problems or questions concerning
code issues and problems that are encountered in the field and the
office and provide solutions to these problems.
o
Coordinate and conduct
preliminary and final review of new projects, either in the office or at
job locations, with other agencies (Fire Marshal, Health Department,
etc.) in order to eliminate confusion and expedite review requirements.
o
Train department personnel
with regard to code requirements and issues.
o
Assist and recommend and
verify code requirements and issues with the County Engineer and clarify
and substantiate any question they may have.
o
Troubleshoot problems in
the field to assist the inspector with problem assignments.
o
Cover other Inspector’s
areas in their absence.
o
Document results of
inspections into the computer system.
o
Attend training classes and
seminars.
o
Perform the functions of
Combination Inspector I and II.
o
Performs
related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
AND REQUIREMENTS:
o
High
school diploma or GED certificate.
o
Advanced technical school
training as an electrician, plumber, HVAC tradesman, etc.
o
Thorough knowledge of
building, plumbing, mechanical, energy, fire, ADA, and related
state and
o
federal regulations
o
Ability to read and
interpret plans and specifications.
o
Ability to communicate
building regulations to architects and engineers.
o
Knowledge of structural
principals and general building practices.
o
Ability to communicate
effective
o
Possess basic computer
skills.

APPLICATION
FOR THIS RECRUITMENT:

the front of this announcement. An application may be rejected if it is

Berkeley County normally does not reimburse travel expenses incurred to
attend a scheduled interview.
EXAMINATION
PROCEDURE:
The kind of
examination/screening for positions announced will vary with each
position and may include:

an evaluation of training
and experience

personal and/or group
interview

written and/or spoken
examination(s)
o
performance test(s)

a background investigation
o
a physical examination*and
o
a drug test*.
*These examinations
are administered after offer of employment.
PROBATIONARY
PERIOD:
Berkeley County is an
“At-Will” employer. However, new employees normally serve a
probationary period of six (6) months before attaining regular status.
The length of the probationary period may vary depending on the position
and may be extended depending on performance. The probationary period is
considered part of the examination process to determine the employees
fitness for the position in which he/she was placed.
COMPENSATION:
Berkeley County
employees are paid every two (2) weeks. A new employee ordinarily starts
work at the rate specified in this announcement. The Berkeley County
Commission reviews compensation increases as part of the normal budget
preparation process and makes the appropriate compensation adjustments
at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1).
ANNUAL
LEAVE, SICK LEAVE AND HOLIDAYS:
(the following is
unavailable for part-time and temporary positions)
o
Employees earn 1.50 days of
sick leave per month/18 days annually with unlimited accumulation.
o
Berkeley County observes 12
paid holidays per year and Primary and General Election Days as they
occur.
o
Employees accumulate annual
leave according to the following schedule:

coverage. The County pays 100% of the employee costs and the employee
pays for any dependent coverage elected.
