          RECRUITMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Deputy Sheriff

 Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department

 $27,135 until 6/30/06

$30,548 annually effective 7/1/06 for non-certified personnel

$34,214 effective 7/1/06 for certified personnel w/2 years minimum experience

  

Applications for Deputy Sheriff of Berkeley County are now being accepted. Applications must be obtained in person, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Berkeley County Clerk’s Office, 100 West King Street, Room 1, Martinsburg, WV. Applications must be obtained, completed and returned no later than 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, 2006. Dates of the Civil Service Examination will be announced at a later time. 

 

KIND OF WORK:

 

Under limited supervision performs general duty law enforcement work to protect lives, property and rights of the public for the Sheriff's Department. Work involves answering complaint calls and patrolling the County in an official vehicle to deter crime or apprehend violators or suspects; investigating and securing crime scenes, and enforcement of all traffic and safety laws. Employee is also responsible for testifying in court. Employee must exercise tact and firmness in frequent public contact. Employee is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned tasks. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Reports to the Shift Supervisor or other designated official. 

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 

Patrols an assigned area of the County; monitors radio calls; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments.

 

Answers complaint calls and assists in investigating crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses; gathers evidence; interrogates suspects and makes arrests; prepares investigation reports.

 

Investigates accidents; performs first aid; secures and clears accident scenes; directs traffic.

 

Fingerprints and photographs crime scenes.

 

Appears in court as a witness to give testimony; may confer with supervisory personnel for advice in complex cases.

 

Monitors vehicle speed with radar; conducts criminal and driving checks; issues summons or warnings.

 

Prepares various reports and forms such as information reports, offense reports, accident reports, Prosecuting Attorney’s reports, tow sheets, lab requests, etc.

 

Deputy maintains uniform/equipment to current standards.

  

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

 

Become a Berkeley County, WV resident within one year of being appointed.

 

Must be between 18 and 45 years of age (WV Code)

 

Excellent health (standard weight in proportion to height)

 

No police record

 

Must successfully pass all examinations administered by the Civil Service Commission

 

Be available to attend all training as required by the position

 

Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent

 

Must pass fitness standards for acceptance to police academy

 

Must successfully pass a physical agility test which will be scheduled and administered by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department.

APPLICATION FOR THIS RECRUITMENT:

All applications for Deputy Sheriff of Berkeley County must be obtained in person, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Berkeley County Clerk’s Office, 100 West King Street, Room 1, Martinsburg, WV, 25401. Applications must be completed and returned on or before the date specified on the front of this announcement. An application may be rejected if it is not complete or is received after the specified closing date. Successful applicants will be notified of the Civil Service Exam date at a later time.

 

COMPENSATION:

Berkeley County employees are paid every two (2) weeks. A new employee ordinarily starts work at the rate specified in this announcement. The Berkeley County Commission reviews compensation increases as part of the normal budget preparation process and makes the appropriate compensation adjustments at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1).

 

ANNUAL LEAVE, SICK LEAVE AND HOLIDAYS:

(the following is unavailable for part-time and temporary positions)

o         Employees earn 1.50 days of sick leave per month/18 days annually with unlimited accumulation.

o         Berkeley County observes 12 paid holidays per year and Primary and General Election Days as they occur.

o         Employees accumulate annual leave according to the following schedule:

o         Regular employees are required to participate in the West Virginia Public Employee Retirement Plan

o         Life Insurance is provide to full-time employees, their spouse and eligible dependents.

o         Regular full-time employees may elect to join the County sponsored health plan which includes medical, hospitalization, major medical, dental, and prescription drug coverage. The County pays 100% of the employee costs and the employee pays for any dependent coverage elected.

o         A deferred compensation program is available.

o         The County provides access to Employee Assistance Programs.

o         Direct deposit is available to any banking institution designated by the employee.
